Floris Meijer

Since graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2022, designer Floris Meijer has been exploring the interplay between old and new. On the one hand, he is drawn to traditional crafts and techniques. On the other, he embraces the possibilities offered by contemporary, computer controlled machinery.

This combination of fascinations is reflected in his CAM Series. The vases, for example, draw their forms from traditional vase models of the past, while their textures have a distinctly contemporary character. To achieve these textures, Meijer works with CAM technology, or Computer Aided Manufacturing. This allows him to create moulds with patterns and textures that would be difficult, or impossible, to achieve through other techniques.

Meijer explores the interplay between materials, such as translucent porcelain and solid wood in his wall lamps. By bringing together different materials and production techniques, he creates objects in which digital precision and traditional craftsmanship come together.
